Course Description:

There are more than 1,500 oral care brands on the market, and cavities and gum disease are still the most common chronic diseases on earth. Something doesn’t add up. This session examines why. Dr. Kami Hoss walks through six specific failure points hiding in everyday products, from one-size-fits-all prescribing and enamel-only routines to acidic formulations and the sterilize-the-mouth approach shared by conventional and “natural” brands alike. He then presents the science that corrects each one, and turns it into a six-factor standard any clinician can apply to any product in about thirty seconds. Attendees leave with the standard, a label-reading method they can teach patients, and chairside language that changes what patients actually buy.

Learning Objectives:

  • Evaluate any oral care product against a six-factor standard covering personalization, whole-mouth coverage, multi-active formulation, pH, microbiome impact, and ingredient safety.
  • Explain the role of pH and the oral microbiome in caries and periodontal disease, and identify common product ingredients that undermine both.
  • Describe how the ingredients currently driving the category work, including fluoride, micro- and nano-hydroxyapatite, prebiotics, essential oils, and vitamins D3 and K2, and recognize when each is indicated or better avoided.
  • Differentiate marketing claims such as natural, whitening, and antibacterial from the mechanisms that determine whether a product protects the mouth.
  • Recommend product systems matched to a patient’s age, stage, and risk profile rather than a single generic formulation.
  • Use chairside language that translates the standard into instructions patients will follow.
Practical Applications:

Participants will learn how to:

  • Evaluate oral care products using six factors: personalization, whole-mouth coverage, multi-active formulation, pH, microbiome impact, and ingredient safety.
  • Recommend oral care products based on each patient’s age, oral health needs, and individual risk factors rather than relying on one-size-fits-all solutions.
  • Teach patients to read product labels and distinguish evidence-based ingredients and mechanisms from marketing claims such as “natural,” “whitening,” and “antibacterial.”
