Course Description:

We are a diabetic nation. In fact, by 2050, it is estimated that one in three American adults will be diabetic. And given the bi-directional effects of diabetes on periodontal disease, if you don’t know your patient's glycemic status, you might just be treating patients with one hand tied behind your back. This webinar will examine the pathologic progression from health to pre-diabetes to diabetes and the evil role of chronic fructose exposure. We will also discuss a newly validated dental office-friendly pre-diabetes and diabetes screening tool. You will not want to miss this if you are a practicing dentist or hygienist.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify the physiologic progression from chronic fructose exposure to insulin resistance pre-diabetes to diabetes.
  • Identify the roles of leptin and insulin in obesity and diabetes progression.
  • Create an in-office diabetes SCREENING tool that requires no weight scales or BMI calculation.
  • Identify the difference between diagnostic tests such as A-1 C, FPG, and OGTT.
  • Recognize and plan for current practices and the future of diabetes DIAGNOSIS in the dental office.
  • Recognize and plan for how to facilitate health change behavior to avoid diabetes progression.

Dr. Susan Maples leads a successful, insurance-independent dental practice. She brings to you preventive and restorative dental expertise, a passion for mouth-body total health, a master’s degree in business/marketing, and 29 years of experience in private practice.
