Dr. Bradley Bale graduated from University of Kentucky School of Medicine in 1974. He was board certified in Family Practice in 1978. He is one of the nation’s leading specialists in preventing heart attacks, stroke and diabetes.

Convinced that standard of care wasn’t doing enough to identify early stages of CVD and avert recurrences in heart attack and stroke survivors, he cofounded the Bale/Doneen Method with Amy Doneen in 2001. Four years ago this personalized approach of CV risk assessment and management evolved to an effectiveness level sufficient enough to allow them to attach a ‘guarantee’ to their clinical practices.

Their research on CVD prevention has been published in such respected medical journals as Atherosclerosis, Post Graduate Medicine, Journal of the National Medical Association, Journal of Clinical Lipidology, Journal of Clinical and Experimental Cardiology, Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing, The Medical Roundtable: Cardiovascular Edition, Physician’s Weekly, Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine and ADVANCE for Healthy Aging. Dr. Bale is on the editorial board for the medical journal: Healthcare in Low-resource Settings. Dr. Bale has also served as a reviewer for American Journal of Cardiology and Preventing Chronic Disease. He and Amy Doneen co-authored the book Beat the Heart Attack Gene. Saliva has long been considered a “mirror of the body” that reflects the state of overall health. A wide range of systemic diseases, such as diabetes and Sjögren’s syndrome, have oral manifestations that clinicians (physicians and dentists) can encounter in patients at various stages of disease development.

In recent years, sparked by initiatives from the National Institute of Dental & Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), saliva has attracted widespread interest as a diagnostic medium for rapid, point-of-care testing. The advantages of using saliva for disease diagnostics include ease of access, noninvasive sample collection, increased acceptance by patients, and reduced risks of infectious disease transmission. Oral samples are readily accessible as whole saliva or by sampling secretions from specific glands or gingival crevicular fluid.

Advances in the science of salivary diagnostics have led to identification of disease signatures of candidate biomarkers and/or confirmation of genetic susceptibility for systemic conditions, particularly in molecular oncology. With the development of the salivary proteome, transcriptome, micro-RNA, metabolome and microbiome as diagnostics alphabets (salivaomics) fully enable saliva to be translated for personalized individual medicine applications. Salivary biomarkers panels have been developed for oral cancer, lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast and ovarian cancers. Coupled with the development of point-of-care technologies and the emerging trend of chairside screening for medical conditions, the clinical impact of scientifically credentialed salivary biomarkers for molecular oncology application will include the improvement of access to care, reducing health disparities and impacting global health.

Learning Objectives

  1. History of salivary diagnostics
  2. Current basic, translational and clinical developments of salivary diagnostics
  3. Salivary diagnostics for dental practice

Exposure to the latest information about oral disease and its systemic impact coupled with the concept of early heart disease detection and management has created opportunities to identify and stabilize any disease that contributes to total body inflammation. For dentists, this would be any patient with active periodontal disease. At the root of most periodontal infections are bacteria. After looking at the microbial profile of every periodontal infection I propose to treat, I have changed my focus from striving to provide only ideal periodontal health to understanding the potential effects this disease has on total body wellness.

This presentation will outline the criteria for the development of an office wide periodontal policy. It will outline how periodontal disease awareness sparks further medical evaluation. Emerging science in vascular disease and stroke prevention reinforces our concern. It will also create awareness about the opportunity to integrate our dental practices with medical practices, and physicians that have aligned thinking, to take an integrative oral medicine approach.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the role of salivary diagnostics in periodontal disease management.
  2. Understand the components of a periodontal policy.
  3. Understand the collaborative opportunity between dentists and physicians.

Bacterial resistance to environmental change occurs faster than the human immune system. With horizontal gene transfer (transformation, transduction and conjugation), bacteria are highly adaptive to chemical and physical changes, increasing bacterial resistance and longevity, especially in regards to antibiotic usage. Effective treatment must take biofilm communication and adaptation strategies into account.

Upon completion of this course, you should

  • Know and understand three forms of bacterial adaptation
  • Describe the challenges that bacterial adaptation pose to antibiotic treatment
  • Explain the benefits of direct medication delivery to treat oral biofilms

Dr. Jason B. Wischmeyer, M.D., Ph.D., F.A.C.C. is an interventional cardiologist practicing in Lubbock, TX. After almost fifteen years in private practice, he joined the faculty of the Texas Tech University School Of Medicine where he is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of the Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program.

Dr. Wischmeyer’s approach has been to provide comprehensive care to patients with heart and vascular disease including preventative care. However, he is convinced that the future of cardiovascular disease management is prevention. Effective prevention for heart attack and stroke must include aggressive evidence-based medical therapy as well as patient education.

He feels that spending time with patients to inform and educate them is the cornerstone of success. It enables the individual to take charge of their future health. As a cardiologist, he often sees patients with problems, which might have been prevented, or who have had a recurring cycle of cardiovascular events, which were not necessary. Traditional medical practice focuses on problems, which have already occurred. To impact the course of heart and vascular disease requires much more, both of the patient and the physician. Dr. Wischmeyer offers preventative care in addition to dealing with the acute consequences of cardiovascular disease such as heart attack and stroke. His position at the Texas Tech School of Medicine allows him to train the next generation of cardiovascular specialists to deal with the epidemic of heart and vascular disease we are faced with today.

Dr. Wischmeyer was born in Dallas, TX and attended Texas A&M University and The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester MN and then cardiology fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland OH. These hospitals have ranked first and second with US News and World Report for many years. He also completed training in interventional cardiology and peripheral vascular intervention at Mid America Heart Institute, Kansas City, MO. He practiced for nine years at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, prior to moving to Lubbock and now is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Texas Tech University.

Dr. Wischmeyer has longstanding ties to Lubbock, TX, as his wife grew up there. He has three beautiful children age’s five to six. In addition to spending time with his family, he is active in aviation. He serves and an FAA designated Medical Examiner and is an instrument rated private pilot.

His goal is simple. To care for, educate and motivate patients in order to optimize their health, add quality to their life, and empower them to control their future.

Mouth breathing doesn’t look good, but more importantly it leads to serious oral and general health problems. The physiology of breathing explains why less oxygen is absorbed with mouth breathing compared to nose breathing. Mouth breathing, also called sleep disordered breathing, is implicated in sleep apnea, attention deficit disorder and daytime fatigue. Ankyloglossia, infant feeding, pacifier use, thumb sucking and tongue rest position may all influence mouth breathing. Three essential actions taken by dental professionals will help switch mouth breathers back to nasal breathing.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  1. Understand oxygen absorption differences between nasal and mouth breathing
  2. Describe the systemic implications of mouth breathing
  3. Explain how mouth breathing influences facial development in children
  4. Describe the benefits of xylitol for enhanced nasal breathing

Most dental teams will say that they are implementing the oral systemic model in their practice. Just like patients who call in to your practice only know how to ask for a cleaning, you likely do not know to ask for a Complete Health Practice.

How do you know you are fully incorporating the Complete Health Model?

Do you have case acceptance consistently at or above 67%?

Are your hygiene openings the exception and not the norm?

Are you flooded with referrals from patients who are blown away by the health education, care and value you AND your team consistently delivers?

If you answered “no” then join Gary Kadi, author of Million Dollar Dentistry and The Dentist: Americas Unsung Healthcare Hero – and learn the unconventional total health practice management methods and strategies that will allow you to work smarter and achieve your practice vision.

Gary will reveals practical, step-by-step guidelines on how to make this your practice’s best year ever – by implementing his proprietary Complete Health Dentistry business model.

Fill the 3 largest cavities in your practice – in one session.

Gary Kadi will identify – and show you how to fix – the three largest cavities in your practice:

1—Low case acceptance. A typical practice has a staggering $1.4 million in incomplete treatment plans sitting in their charts.

Gary shares proven mouth body patient education techniques your team can use to improve case acceptance in your practice starting the next day.

2—Lack of ideal new patients. “Ideal patients” are patients who honor their appointments, feel they are getting added value out of the practice, and refer additional patients to you.

Gary shows you AND YOUR TEAM how to create value using the oral systemic connection and make your value clearly apparent to your patients, so they show up, pay in full and in turn, translate that value to their peers and family members.

3—Hygiene holes. Other than you your hygienists are the educators and top revenue-producers in your practice. Yet in most practices hygienists have so many holes in their schedules that they are not getting patients as healthy and making you the money they could.

This goes well beyond “what they didn’t teach you about practice management in dental school” because it was invented, developed and refined over the last 19 years.

During your session with Gary, you will leave with knowing his one of a kind oral systemic system for the:

  • 3 ways to supercharge your hygiene schedule.
  • 5 tips for improving case acceptance by using the oral systemic education model
  • The 5 essential tools of a Complete Health Dental Practice.
  • Why patients say yes or no to treatment plans using his mouth-body health chart.
  • How to locate a patient’s “personal motivator.”
  • The triple-win in your dental practice.
  • How to add more “ideal patients” to your practice.
  • The 5-step healthy patient blueprint.
  • And more.

An interactive hands-on workshop designed to equip today’s dental clinician with the skill set to recognize and identify the earliest warning signs of today’s fastest growing segment of oral cancers. HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer manifests a number of subtle signs and symptoms, that if recognized early greatly impact survival rates.

Oral cancer typically is discovered in late stages with a 5 year survival rate of 30%. According to SEER data, survival rates increase to 80 – 90% when discovered in early stages. A recent statement in JADA related to late stage discovery of oral cancers “indicated the need for improving the COE and for developing adjuncts to help detect and diagnose oral mucosal lesions”. The extraoral and intraoral examination will be reviewed as well as the use of adjunctive screening devices to earlier identify abnormalities that may not have been visible with white light examination.

There has never been a greater sense of urgency to adhere to close examination of the oral cavity. Join Jo-Anne Jones, for an interactive educational experience that will change the way you screen for oral cancer forever. There is an urgent need for change. It’s within our hands.

Learning Objectives

  1. To perform a systematic extraoral and intraoral examination with attention to high risk anatomical areas related both to HPV and non-HPV oral and oropharyngeal cancer.
  2. To recognize the subtle, life-saving signs and symptoms that may accompany HPV oropharyngeal cancer.
  3. To compare and contrast the value of adjunctive screening devices designed to reveal what may not have been visible with white light examination.
