ORAL PATHOGENS

Course Description

For decades, periodontitis has been considered as an infectious disease. Recent evidence demonstrates that the disease process mimics that of patient conditions characterized as chronic inflammatory systemic diseases.

Managing chronic inflammatory periodontitis requires different methodologies including host modulation.

Learning Objectives

  • Incorporate the paradigm: periodontal medicine into the practice
  • Describe unique parallels of periodontal disease progression to conditions as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Review risk assessment strategies to determine susceptibility
  • Consider genetics, diet (probiotics/nutraceuticals), and stress as variables in controlling disease
  • Manage gingival inflammation as a systemic and local immune response with antioxidants and microthin ultrasonic/ laser combos

Course Description

Substantial controversy continues to surround the use of lasers in periodontal therapy. The results of recent research studies suggest that lasers provide a viable alternative to traditional periodontal surgery. Properly applied, lasers produce less bleeding, less swelling and less discomfort. Lasers treat the cause of periodontal disease rather than the effects, by specifically targeting identifiable periodontal pathogens. The most exciting recent advance in Laser Therapy is the ability to predictably treat ailing-failing dental implants. Regeneration of periodontal tissues is the gold standard by which we measure treatment effectiveness. Lasers provide an enhanced method for achieving this elusive goal for teeth and dental implants

Learning Objectives

Key points will include

  • What are the differences between the many lasers being used in dentistry and how they differ from each other? Are they all created equal?
  • How does laser periodontal treatment differ from traditional pocket-elimination surgery?
  • What is LANAP” and is there evidence to support this treatment modality?
  • How is the laser usedfor the successful treatment of “Ailing-Failing” implants.
  • Is this method of treatment a “flash in the pan” or does this represent the dawn of a new future, solidly based on biology and physics?
