About the lecture

Title: "Breathing Disordered Sleep: The Intersection of Sleep and Airway. "

Description:

Sleep-disordered breathing is common, underdiagnosed, and often missed in patients who don't fit the classic profile. This session covers who to test and how to read a sleep study beyond the AHI. It also looks at where consumer and medical-grade wearables add clinical value, how to work with local and virtual sleep physicians, and the full range of therapy beyond CPAP.

Learning Objectives:

  • Who deserves a sleep study and how to understand the results
  • The role of consumer and medical-grade wearables in the management of sleep apnea
  • How to work effectively with your local and virtual sleep physician
  • Treatment options for sleep-disordered breathing

Practical Applications:

  • Test on clinical suspicion, not body type. Resistant hypertension, AFib, nocturia, and unrefreshing sleep warrant testing even in lean patients. Base treatment on hypoxic burden and positional/REM patterns, not the AHI alone.
  • Use wearables to track trends, not to diagnose. Multi-night devices speed diagnosis and confirm treatment response. Consumer trackers should prompt a formal evaluation, not replace one.
  • Match therapy to the patient's physiology, and share the follow-up. CPAP is one option among several. Coordinated care across the PCP, dentist, ENT, and sleep physician improves adherence and outcomes.
