Course Description:

We now know that inflammation caused by oxidative stress is causative of most of the heart attacks and strokes that occur. It is becoming increasingly clear that the same basic pathology is responsible for most of the microvascular processes that lead to the chronic diseases of aging. Knowing the prevalence of oral infections and their contribution to systemic inflammation, the nation’s largest concierge medicine organization has endeavored to bring doctors, dentists, and dental hygienists together to collaborate on optimizing patient care in their communities. This is the story that answers “Why?”, “How?” and “How’s it going?”

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize the connection between oral infections, salivary pathogens, and systemic diseases
  • Appreciate the role of inflammation in cardiovascular disease and identify several common (but underutilized) lab markers of inflammation
  • Identify options for finding and treating subclinical atherosclerosis

Practical Applications:

  • Increase the use of salivary diagnostic testing to personalize care
  • Utilize common radiologic and sonographic tests to more accurately identify patients in need of aggressive CV prevention strategies
  • Become comfortable with interprofessional communication between dental & medical offices
