Course Description:

Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is a growing epidemic in the US, affecting nearly 30 million Americans. With an alarming rise in the number of diabetic and pre-diabetic patients in the state of Iowa and the established association that exists between diabetes and oral health (periodontal disease in particular), it is essential for oral health professionals to understand management considerations for this population. This course will discuss the fundamental links between diabetes and periodontal disease, manifestations in the oral cavity, potential complications, and practical treatment considerations for treating this cohort.

Learning Objectives:

  1.     Recognize the oral manifestations and complications of Type 2 diabetes.
  2.     Understand the mechanism behind oral complications in diabetic patients.
  3.     Determine and modify treatment options based on the diabetic control and severity of the oral complications.
  4.     Recognize and manage emergencies related to DM in the dental office.
