Course Description:

This course presents the latest scientific research that defines the necessity for testing for the most critical oral pathogens that cause and contribute to systemic diseases and all forms of periodontal diseases. It is intended for all medical and dental practices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recall and summarize the essential findings and conclusions from the literature about HR5 and medical microbiology during the period from 2019 to 2021.
  • Investigate the significance of particular biofilm pathogens in instigating a dysbiotic state and triggering both periodontitis and systemic inflammation, demonstrating the ability to dissect complex relationships within microbial communities.
  • Grasp the underlying dynamics of the red complex, comprehending its role in periodontal health and disease.
  • Describe HR5 as the newly identified member of the red complex and elucidate its relevance within the microbial community.
  • Examine real-world case studies related to HR5 testing, showcasing the ability to apply theoretical knowledge to practical scenarios.
  • Identify and critically evaluate four compelling reasons to conduct HR5 testing, emphasizing the capacity to assess the rationale for this specific diagnostic approach.

Speaker Bio:

Thomas Nabors, DDS,  is a remarkable figure with an impressive career spanning thirty-seven years in oral microbiology, immunology, and the evolving domain of Oral Systemic Health. With a solid foundation in Dentistry, he embarked on a pioneering journey by establishing Oral DNA in 2008, the first diagnostic laboratory to emphasize oral pathogens' identification and diagnostic significance. Dr. Nabors' groundbreaking work led to the acquisition of Oral DNA by Quest Diagnostics in 2009, where he continued to excel as the Chief Dental Officer until 2012. Throughout his career, he has remained actively engaged in the industry, tirelessly championing the advancement of science and its practical implementation, significantly impacting practice management. Dr. Nabors holds a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences and has held senior positions in several prestigious professional organizations, including the American Academy for Oral Systemic Health. His commitment to education is further evident in his role as an Adjunct Professor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, specifically within the Bioscience Research Department.
