Course Description:

High-risk periodontal pathogens are causative of arterial disease development.  The definition of periodontal disease must include high-risk oral pathogens to ensure the opportunity to mitigate the number one cause of death and disability – heart attacks and strokes.
Through the lens of oxidative stress and arterial disease development, we will discuss the atherogenic triad and the vital impact of dental hygienists and dentists as key members of the healthcare team.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review the root causes of arterial disease – both micro and macrovascular disease.
  • Appreciate the importance of identifying the role of high-risk periodontal pathogens and the importance of clinical laboratory testing in dentistry.
  • Address a path of communication between medicine and dentistry for the ultimate benefit of the systemic health of the patient.

Practical Applications:

  • Incorporate salivary diagnostic testing into routine dental assessments to identify high-risk periodontal pathogens.
  • Begin collaborating with medical providers by sharing oral pathogen results to support systemic risk evaluation and treatment planning.
  • Use patient education to connect oral infections with cardiovascular risk, reinforcing the importance of periodontal care as part of total health management.
