Course Description:
The mouth hosts microbial activity crucial for oral and systemic health, but certain pathogens produce toxins like lipopolysaccharides, organic acids, and proteolytic enzymes that can cause diseases such as periodontitis and dental caries. These toxins also affect other body systems, contributing to systemic inflammation and dysfunction. Understanding these mechanisms helps healthcare providers address chronic illnesses holistically.
Learning Objectives:
- Recall three biological toxins produced in the mouth.
- Explain how these toxins contribute to the development of three oral diseases.
- Analyze the impact of oral disease on extra-oral organs and tissues, describing their mechanisms of involvement.
- Identify three commonly found toxicants that are either present in or have an effect on the mouth.
- Evaluate the effects of fluoride toxicity by discussing its mechanisms and potential health consequences.
