Original Publication Date: February 19, 2014
Course Description:
There appears to be much confusion regarding the use of systemic antibiotics in managing periodontal infections. Questions arise at the clinical level, such as: Should I use a systemic antibiotic? If so, for which patient scenario? Which antibiotic should I use? And for how long? Finally, is the use of systemic antibiotics more beneficial for the patient than not using one based on perceived risks?
A necessary randomized controlled clinical trial that has recently been published will be reviewed, along with other data, to help answer these questions.
Learning Objectives:
- Review the current literature of a randomized clinical trial to determine the advantages.
- Identify ways to assist the clinician in determining which antibiotic(s) are most appropriate.
- Identify when to use antibiotics and for how long.
- Review current literature regarding chlorhexidine.
