Course Description:

Explore the transformative potential of Photobiomodulation (PBM) in oral and systemic health through this comprehensive course. Delve into the non-thermal, mitochondria-stimulating effects of light therapy akin to photosynthesis, leading to increased ATP production and decreased oxidative stress. Drawing from an extensive repository of over 1,000 randomized clinical trials and systematic reviews, participants will gain insights into the manifold applications of PBM, including post-operative pain management, socket healing, dentin hypersensitivity, laser anesthesia, trismus, TMD, and oral mucositis. Practical treatment demonstrations will further augment understanding, facilitating the immediate application of PBM in clinical settings. By the end of the course, participants will be equipped to integrate PBM into their practice, addressing diverse patient needs for improved oral health and overall wellness.

Learning Objectives:

  • Comprehend the foundational principles of Photobiomodulation (PBM), elucidating the non-thermal mechanism and its stimulation of mitochondria to enhance ATP production while mitigating oxidative stress.
  • Evaluate the evidence-based applications of PBM derived from extensive data collected through numerous randomized clinical trials and systematic reviews.
  • Discern and apply PBM treatments effectively across various oral health conditions and systemic concerns.
  • Apply the acquired knowledge practically, learning the methodologies and techniques for implementing PBM treatments in patient care.

Speaker Bios:

James Carroll, the Founder and CEO of THOR Photomedicine, is a prolific figure in Photobiomodulation (PBM), co-authoring 24 academic papers and contributing to five books on the subject. Renowned for expertise in PBM dose, dose-rate effects, and parameter measurement and reporting, Carroll has chaired conferences and has a fellowship with The Royal Society of Medicine. Notable speaking engagements include presenting at a US Congressional briefing and the White House on PBM as a solution for the opioid crisis and at the United Nations Global Health Impact Forum on Photobiomodulation for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration. Honored with awards such as the 2020 Presidential Commendation from the World Association for Photobiomodulation Therapy and the 2021 T.H. Maiman Award for Excellence in Dental Laser Research, Carroll's contributions have been pivotal in advancing PBM research and practice.

Sara Jane Snyder is a Registered Dental Hygienist with a Bachelor’s Degree in dental hygiene and an MBA. Since 2019, she has been the dental and oncology specialist for THOR Photomedicine, expanding the use of PBM in dental practices and oncology centers to benefit patients and providers. Additionally, she teaches dental hygiene at Montgomery Community College.
