Course Description:

The two most important lifestyle-related factors that impact periodontal disease are diabetes and smoking. Insulin resistance and tobacco are also two critical sources of chronic inflammation in their own right. Here is an introduction to identifying and stabilizing Type 2 Diabetes, including oral signs, a dental-friendly screening tool, diagnostic testing, and communication with medical teams—next, a look at tobacco cessation in your dental office. Among smokers, Susan believes if you are not practicing smoking cessation in conjunction with periodontal therapy, you are not treating the disease. Take a seat and put on your seatbelt.

Learning Objectives:

  • Identify ways to help patients treat insulin resistance.
  • Understand and recognize the importance of smoking cessation for long-term dental health.
  • Identify the importance of practicing smoking cessation in conjunction with periodontal therapy.
