Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune disorder in which the immune system of genetically predisposed people mounts an attack in response to gluten, a protein found in grains and products made from grains such as processed foods, medicines, and cosmetics. This immune system response results in destruction that an affect multiple body systems. Left untreated, celiac disease can result in serious systemic complications by injuring the small intestine and reducing its ability to absorb nutrients.

One time, the damage may escalate to skin rashes, lactose intolerance, infertility, bone weakness, and nerve damage. Recognition of the oral manifestations of celiac disease may be the key to discovering this devastating disease in patients whose symptoms are less evident. In this course you will become familiar with the various signs and symptoms that may be pointing to this serious systemic illness. Helping patients understand that they may have gluten-related disorders could be the key to a lifetime of improved health.

Learning Objectives

  2. Identify sources of gluten and how gluten affects sensitive individuals
  3. Understand other possible causes of gluten sensitivity

Course Description

The epidemic of chronic diseases did not start overnight, but has its origin thousands of years ago. The first sign was the shift in the oral microbiome, but then the other “gateway” microbiomes would shortly follow. How did this all happen? What can we do to “save mankind”? Action is absolutely required as we have shifted the microbiome that co-speciated with homo sapiens over millions of years, and we haven’t a clue what direction we are now headed. Modern diseases that are epigenetically derived are now commonplace in children, such as, A.S.D, anxiety depression, I.B.D., obesity, diabetes, and allergies, creating a lifetime of illness. Modern medicine responded with numerous medications, all well-meaning, but all with their own specific set of side-effects. Oral health specialists should be at the fore-front of the battle to improve health. Fortunately, there is indeed hope, as new research, has determined where we once were, and where we have to find our way back to. This presentation concludes with all the newest in promising modalities to restore our health.

Learning Objectives

  1. The participant will learn how and when the epidemic of ‘”modern” disease started.
  2. The health status of our ancestors will discussed along with data concerning their health conditions. Learn that it is not just about the pathogens, but it is also about the commensals!
  3. Discover the modern health conditions, especially the epigenetically initiated diseases that have occurred due to the microbiome shifts. This will be documented for the attendee along with a timeline of events.
  4. Learn the concepts of future treatment modalities that will restore the health of our population.
